Did you know that the best time to train a dog is between the ages of two to six months. The prime environmental and socialization period is before 12 weeks of age. Training and more importantly socializing your puppy at this age will have the biggest impact on their ability to handle new dogs, people and environments. If you look at the amount of dogs that are placed in rescue, most are relinquished between the ages of six months to two years. That is well past the time that the small window of opportunity closes and the dog becomes an adolescent.
Almost all of today's trainers agree that training and socializing your puppy at an early age is the most single important thing you can do for your dog. Because of this more trainers are holding puppy socialization classes, but unfortunately for some puppies this could do more harm than good. Also, your puppy will be getting the exposure to other dogs and people, but not a great variety of environments.
It has been a long held belief that exposing your puppy to various enviroments out side the home before they have completed all their vaccinations can lead to serious health issues. This is true to an extent but according to the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB)"While puppies’ immune systems are still developing during these early months, the combination of maternal immunity, primary vaccination, and appropriate care makes the risk of infection relatively small compared to the chance of death from a behavior problem." So exposing your dog to less "dog frequented" areas is acceptable.
Some owners are reluctant to get their puppies out there because the pup is not trained and can be unruly. Choosing to "wait it out" in hope that the puppy will "outgrow" it rarely ever happens. You then have a puppy who's bad behaviors have escalated resulting in fewer good behaviors to reinforce and increased bad behaviors to be eliminated.
Proper training and socialization early on in your puppies life is crusial to their bahavioral and social development.
I will help your puppy get over the beginning training hurtles of exposure to new people, places and other dogs thus making it easier for you to focus on and continue their socialization training.
Progress varies with each puppy. Socialization should always be done carefully and at the puppies speed in order to overcome any possible fear issues. Your puppies level of learning and temperament will determine the amount of time and level of exposure. Expect the puppy to spend 1 to 11/2 hours with Angel. This includes travel time, training and play time. The owner MUST be proactive with continued training to achieve desired results. At the end of the training week the owner will be required to "catch up" on our progress and learn how to continue their lessons at home.
